Types Of SPF

Spray Polyurethane Foam insulation is categorized into two types of products:

  • Two component open cell foam (ocSPF)
  • Two component closed cell foam (ccSPF)

SPF is typically applied in two different ways, high and low pressure systems depending on the application.

Spray polyurethane foam systems and refill tanks

Small and mid sized projects are usually done with low pressure (usually below 250 psi ) two component systems. These systems are used to seal and insulate small to mid sized areas in the home like attics, crawl spaces, and rim joists. Only professionals with proper training and protective equipment should use these products.

Spray Polyurethane Foam high pressure systems

Two component high pressure systems (usually 800-1600 psi) use drums for each component and are typically used to insulate large areas in new construction and renovations on walls and roofs. These systems are for professional use only. These systems also require special training and equipment including respirators.

Usually high pressure application is done with a spray truck that houses both parts of the foam, the air supply, and any other necessary items for a specific application. The truck is parked near the building where the insulation is being installed and hoses are run from the truck to the area to be insulated.
